You can play without Hamachi which is an external server.
Hamachi is able to make easier the connection, no more (you haven't to setup your router or other Firewall)
We made several tests with/without Hamachi.

On my return lancier i will buddy up with you and get the game,however i atill worry about spending 2 hours looking at a 2D map,i just cannot get my head round it.
