Well, it is all eye candy for total war. SOW gives you terrain bonuses, formations road movement. Formations at battalion, regiment, brigade , Division and Corps level. It is slower because it is a war simulation.
One great thing about it is if you had the people you could play a 30v30 with less lag than a NTW 4v4. I am just wanting to show there is another game out there gents. You dont want to play it than dont. I think NTW is about played out.
